New Drive Challenge
A radical new project team approached Gates engineers with a quest of transmitting 450kW over a distance of only 550mm. This short centre distance meant sprocket sizes needed to be very compact. The output speed was specified at almost 3500rpm. Initial investigations revealed a belt width of 250mm wide was required if rubber timing belts were used.
Solution Description
Belt = 14MGT-2100-125 Poly Chain® GT™ Carbon™
DriveR Sprocket = 90 Tooth
DriveN Sprocket = 38 Tooth
Benefits of Gates Product
Poly Chain® GT™ Carbon™ was chosen due to being the highest power density of any belt available. A standard belt width of 125mm is capable of transmitting 800kW if required.
This design team later upgraded their fan diameter and also increased the size of the motor due to the belts high power capacity.
