Taking the Fast Lane to Success: MTAQ Apprentice of the Year, Melissa Smiths Experience with the Penrite Racing Team

Jul 02, 2024

Melbourne - 24th June 2024 – Gates Australia, a leading provider of innovative automotive solutions, was thrilled to have sponsored the ‘Apprentice of the Year’ award at the Motor Trades Association Queensland Awards Gala on 11th November 2023. As an organisation that values the development of young talents in the automotive industry, we are excited about the firm commitment to supporting the growth and recognition of highly skilled and talented automotive apprentices. As part of her prize, we were delighted to provide Melissa the opportunity to complete a week’s work experience with the Penrite Racing team in their Braeside Workshop, Melbourne.

The apprentice had an amazing experience, getting the chance to work closely with the Penrite crew, participate in dismantling and cleaning cars, and even assist with an engine swap.

"I couldn't have asked for a better week with the crew down there", Melissa said. "The Penrite crew was getting ready for the next (Supercars) round, so we had a week of dismantling the cars, cleaning the cars, and an engine swap got done during the week as well and they let me do everything that I could possibly do".

The partnership with MTAQ highlights the importance of nurturing a new generation of skilled technicians, and the team is proud to play a part in this process. Previously, Melissa also had the opportunity to be a part of the Supercars Gold Coast 500 experience, which included pit tours, meeting the drivers, and watching the race from the Penrite Racing Corporate Suite. These experiences are invaluable in helping young automotive apprentices get practical knowledge, which is crucial in the ever-growing complexity of automotive technology.

Gates Australia is passionate about empowering young talent and recognise the significant role apprentices play in ensuring a steady supply of highly qualified professionals to address the evolving challenges faced by the automotive industry today. In 2024, the team is pleased to announce the continuation of the partnership with MTAQ. Once again, the apprentices will be hosted at the Supercars Gold Coast 500 event this year and the ‘Apprentice of the Year’ experience, offering another talented individual the opportunity to spend a week with Penrite Racing at their workshop in the year 2025. This initiative reinforces the commitment to supporting and nurture the next generation of skilled technicians in the automotive industry. Gates is truly excited about the positive impact this partnership will have on the career development of these apprentices and looks forward to the valuable experiences that lie ahead.
