Melbourne – 19th November 2024 – Gates Australia, a leading provider of innovative automotive solutions recognises the pivotal role that apprentice mechanics play in shaping the future of the automotive industry.

Gates is proud to continue its partnership with Repco Authorised Service (RAS) and Motor Trade Association of SA/NT (MTA SA/NT), providing a unique opportunity for talented automotive apprentices.

Since the inception of this program in 2022, and its initial success, Gates revised its structure in late 2023, expanding the experience for the apprentices. This year, the team strategically selected two apprentices to join the Penrite Racing team during the race week for each Supercars round. During these rounds, apprentices are not merely spectators; they immerse themselves in the demanding day-to-day tasks with the Penrite Racing Pit Crew, garnering firsthand knowledge about what it takes to thrive in the fast lane.

However, to foster female participation in the automotive industry, we specifically invited only female Repco Authorised Service apprentices to register their interest for the Supercars Bathurst 1000 round, while one outstanding apprentice from MTA SA/NT was selected as she won the Female Apprentice of the Year award, sponsored by Gates. This initiative aligns with the goal of empowering the next generation of female mechanics and promoting diversity within the automotive industry.

During the race weekend, we had Sarah Campbell (RAS Apprentice), a second-year apprentice at Echuca Service Centre and Paige Cole (MTA SA-NT Female Apprentice of the Year 2024 award winner sponsored by Gates) currently working with BMW Adelaide, who helped the team in various tasks. Working with car #19 and #26 respectively, they not only assisted in tyre changes, but also helped with engine work and ensuring that the brake rotors are spinning and not overheating the brakes during sessions.

Reflecting on her experience, Sarah stated, “I helped with getting tyres ready, assisted in preparing the car and supported - the race team where I could. I would like to thank Gates for the opportunity. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me.”

Paige found the experience highly engaging and stated, “Over the weekend, I’ve been involved with the greatest team, I thank Penrite, and I’ve learnt all sorts of skills which I’m going to take back and apply in my normal apprenticeship.”

Gates Australia invests in the next generation of mechanics. Empowering apprentices not only helps build their skills but also shapes a more inclusive automotive industry. Lastly, after the overwhelming success of our campaign in 2024, we are thrilled to announce that we will continue this initiative through the 2025 Supercars season.
